| PARIS (Reuters) - After a nervous opening match and a tense second one,
world number one Martina Hingis moved into the fourth round of the French
Open Friday with a relaxing 6-3 6-4 win over Kveta Hrdlickova.
Hingis, booed and whistled off Center Court Wednesday after beating
Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo in a super-charged contest, appeared completely
at ease as she stepped on to the same court in front of a sparse morning
crowd.
The 18-year-old Swiss was so relaxed in fact that she took her time
getting into the match and spent 74 minutes disposing of her 84th-ranked
Czech opponent.
After a slow start, Hingis looked set to take control of the match when
she won five of six games to claim the opening set and a 1-0 lead in the
second.
But after Hrdlickova held her serve the set disintegrated into a series
of unforced errors with the two players trading six consecutive breaks.
Level at 4-4 and facing triple break point, Hingis pulled herself together,
fought back to hold serve and then broke the 23-year-old Czech to close
out the match and join defending French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
of Spain in the round of 16.
Sanchez Vicario, the seventh seed, advanced easily with a 6-4 6-1 win
over Romania's Irina Spirlea.
