| BERLIN (TICKER) -- Not even a fan's plea could slow down
Martina Hingis on her way toward her fourth title of the year.
Hingis, the top-ranked Swiss teenager, needed just 42 minutes to dispose
of Julie Halard-Decugis of France, 6-0, 6-1, in today's final of the $1.05
million German Open.
After the first set lasted just 19 minutes, a man in the stands called
out, "Not so fast, Martina." Although she would apologize later, Hingis
continued on her way towards her 23rd career title and her first here in
four tries.
The 18-year-old Hingis improved to 13-1 this year on clay as she played
in her final French Open tuneup. The year's second Grand Slam event begins
a week from Monday.
Hingis never lost a set over the week and lost just two games over her
last three sets. She earned $150,000 and is now tied with Venus Williams
for the lead in tournament victories this season.
Halard-Decugis was looking for her second title of the year after winning
the ASB Bank Classic in New Zealand the first week of the season. The 28-year-old
Frenchwoman was appearing in her first Tier I final after winning five
smaller tournaments.
