| BERLIN (AP) - Martina Hingis completed her day's work
before the crowd had barely settled in.
The world's No. 1 player surged through the first set in 19 minutes
and swept France's Julie Halard-Decugis 6-0, 6-1 Sunday to capture the
$1.05 million German Open.
She won in 42 minutes in a commanding tuneup for the May 24 French Open,
the clay-court major Hingis has yet to win.
The quick work by the 18-year-old Swiss prompted one spectator to yell,
``Not so fast, Martina.''
Hingis finished in 42 minutes for her fourth title this year and the
23rd of her career.
``I apologize to the spectators that it was over so quickly,'' Hingis
said. ``But if it continues like this at the French Open, I'll be happy.''
Hingis was devastating, winning many games at love. She converted her
first match point when Halard-Decugis' return flew long.
Hingis won the German Open for the first time after failing to last
beyond the quarterfinals in three previous tries.
She has won all four of her finals this year, the others being the Australian
Open, Tokyo and Hilton Head.
Halard-Decugis, who has won five minor events, was playing in her first
final of a significant tournament. She will rise from No. 21 to No. 16
in the rankings.
The draw for the $1.05 million tournament was depleted by injuries and
upsets after starting with 16 of the world's top 20 players.
Hingis received $150,000 and Halard-Decugis $70,000.
