| BERLIN (AP) - Martina Hingis swept through the German
Open final on Sunday with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Julie Halard-Decugis of
France.
The world's No. 1 player surged through the first set in 19 minutes
in a commanding tuneup for the May 24 French Open, the clay-court major
Hingis has yet to win.
The quick work by the 18-year-old Swiss prompted one spectator to yell,
``Not so fast, Martina.''
Hingis completed the rout in 42 minutes for her fourth title this year
and the 23rd of her career.
On Saturday, Hingis played excellently in defeating French Open champion
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-4, 6-0.
Hingis earned $150,000 for winning the German Open, a tournament in
which she had failed to last beyond the quarterfinals in three tries.
The draw for the $1.05 million tournament was depleted by injuries and
upsets after starting with 16 of the world's top 20 players.
Halard-Decugis, playing her first final after winning five minor events,
will rise to 16th in the rankings.
