| BERLIN (AP) - Martina Hingis easily advanced at the German
Open today, but the tournament lost Jana Novotna and Mary Pierce.
Hingis, the top seed, breezed into the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory
over Gala Leon Garcia of Spain.
Novotna, the No. 2 seed, was upset by Romania's Ruxandra Dragomir 7-6
(7-4), 6-2 on a day when rain again disrupted play.
Pierce, the No. 5 seed, pulled out of the $1 million clay-court event
with a thigh injury. Pierce had reached the final of her last two tournaments,
in Hamburg and Rome, and lost both times to Venus Williams.
No. 4 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain outlasted Corina Morariu in three
grueling sets. Sanchez-Vicario, the French Open champion, squandered a
5-1 lead in the second set and four match points. But she rallied from
a 4-0 deficit in the third set to win 7-6 (7-0), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Another seed to fall was No. 11 Dominique van Roost, who lost 6-3, 7-5,
to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva.
In a first-round match, Jennifer Capriati beat Amanda Hopmans, a lucky
loser from the Netherlands, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
