ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) - The mother and coach of former world number one Martina Hingis is to work with Myriam Casanova, the Swiss teenager's father Leo said in an interview on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Casanova, ranked 53rd in the world, will work with Melanie Molitor on a daily basis while Hingis remains sidelined with a persistent ankle problem, Leo Casanova told Swiss daily TagBlatt.
Hingis said this week that she might be forced to retire because of the injury.
"Melanie will be a coach for Myriam while Martina Hingis is not playing," Leo, her former coach, said.
"I thought about what I can contribute as a father and I will now take an overview (of her career).
"Melanie will be with Myriam on a daily basis, and she will prepare her for the next tournaments.
"I am glad for the change. It will be like joining Manchester United or Bayern Munich for Myriam. It is a very exciting time.
Casanova made her professional debut in 1999 and won her first WTA title in Brussels last year, her maiden season on the tour. She has also been part of the Swiss Fed Cup team. |
