| TOKYO - Defending champion Martina Hingis has pulled out of next month's US$1.3 million Toray Pan Pacific Open due to a slow recovery in her injured ankle, organizers said Friday.
The Swiss powerhouse was planning to participate in the Tokyo tennis tournament, scheduled for Jan. 28-Feb. 2, but decided to withdraw due to "insufficient recovery from her foot surgery," the tournament's organizing office said in a release.
In May, Hingis underwent surgery on torn and damaged ligaments in her left ankle. That operation followed an earlier one on her right ankle last October.
Those competing in the upcoming tournament, to be held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, will include Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati. |
