| MONTREAL (AP) -- Martina Hingis tumbled out of the Rogers AT&T Cup on Friday night, falling 6-4, 6-3 to third-seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia in a windy quarterfinal match.
Hingis, the Swiss star who won the 1999 and 2000 tournaments, was playing in her first event since May, when she had surgery to repair damaged ligaments in her left knee. She also had surgery on the right ankle in October.
``It's my first tournament back and obviously, there's still work to do,'' said Hingis, seeded sixth. ``The reactions were a little slow.''
Hingis, the 1997 U.S. Open champion, was awarded one of eight wild-card spots in the Open, which begins Aug. 26. She intends to play in New Haven, Conn., next week.
``I'm happy to get through the first couple of rounds here, but as far as getting back to where I was before, I'm not there,'' Hingis said.
Dokic will face second-seeded Jennifer Capriati, a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 winner over fifth-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium.
``I wish we could have just moved it indoors. The wind was brutal,'' said Capriati, the 1991 tournament winner at age 15.
``It's tough, especially in these kinds of matches when you're playing someone like Justine. You've got to play the wind and play the opponent, too. On one side, you go for it and on the other, you try not to hit to hard.''
In the other semifinal, seventh-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France will play eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
Mauresmo beat Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia 6-0, 6-2, and Hantuchova defeated Austria's Barbara Schett 6-3, 6-3. |
