Hingis's Mother Unsure of Martina's U.S. Open Plans

ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) - Former world number one Martina Hingis ( news - profile - photos) may still miss the U.S. Open ( news - web sites) later this month despite making a comeback from injury, her mother and coach Melanie Molitor has said.

Hingis returned from the ankle injury, which has sidelined her since May, in the Canadian Open in Montreal this week.

Molitor said that the injury, which required surgery and kept her out of the French Open ( news - web sites) and Wimbledon ( news - web sites), had stood up to the test well but added it is too early to confirm participation in the U.S. Open, beginning on August 26.

"That is difficult to say," Molitor told Blick newspaper when asked whether Hingis will play in the fourth and final grand slam tournament of the year.

"She needs to simply practice and play in other tournaments.

"Martina has had no problems with the foot not even the day after playing. But now she must just play tennis to strengthen the ankle."

Hingis is not entered to take part in the Open at Flushing Meadows but has asked for a wildcard entry.
