Prize money up again for U.S. Open
Thursday, June 13, 08:37:32 2002 PT

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- The U.S. Open increased prize money to $16.174 million for this year's event, maintaining its status as the richest event in sports.

Men's and women's winners each will get $900,000, up from $850,000 last year, and prize money for doubles continues to be the world's highest, with both men's and women's champions getting $350,000.

The purse also includes $1 million in prize money for the qualifying tournament, the richest qualifier in tennis history and the sixth-largest purse in U.S. tennis.

Last year's purse totaled $15.76 million.

The purse is by far the highest of any of tennis' major tournaments. Wimbledon is second at $12.7 million, followed by the French Open at $11.5 million and the Australian Open at $8.6 million.

The highest-paid non-tennis event is the Daytona 500, which this year was worth $12.3 million.

The Open will be played at the National Tennis Center in New York from Aug. 26-Sept. 8.
