Beaten Hingis Pulls Out of Doubles with Injured Foot
Thursday, March 27, 2002 08:48 PM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - Switzerland's Martina Hingis pulled out of the doubles at the Nasdaq-100 Open Masters on Wednesday after injuring her foot in a crushing 6-4 6-0 quarter-final defeat to American Serena Williams in the singles.

Hingis and partner Anna Kournikova, the sixth seeds, had advanced to the last eight in the doubles and were scheduled to meet Russia's Elena Dementieva and Slovakia's Janette Husarova.

A WTA report described the injury as right plantar fascitis, a strained tendon running along the sole of the foot. But it was not deemed serious.

Former world No. 1 Hingis had already said that she would take time off after the Miami event to prepare for the forthcoming clay court season.
