| INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) -- Second-seeded Martina Hingis beat Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 6-3, and third-seeded Justine Henin defeated Adriana Serra Zanetti 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of the Pacific Life Open on Sunday.
Two of the tournament's top eight seeds were eliminated -- No. 5 Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia was beaten by Anne Kremer of Luxemboug 6-3, 6-0 and No. 8 Elena Dementieva of Russia lost to Alexandra Stevenson 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
Seventh-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy advanced to the fourth round by beating Lilia Osterloh 6-4, 6-3, and Cara Black of Zimbabwe, No. 84 on the WTA Tour, beat No. 14 Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Dokic, who lost to Kremer for the second time this year, said she was slowed by a strained left quad muscle, sustained in a three-set victory over Elena Bovina on Saturday.
``I wasn't even 50 percent,'' said Dokic, who was playing her first tournament in a month because of a right leg injury. ``I wanted to try, to see how it went. As I went further into the match, it got worse.''
Stevenson said she tired in the second against Dementieva, but rallied to earn her first victory in four matches against the Russian.
Black came back from a 5-3 deficit in the second set by winning the next two games at love, then lost just six points in the final five games of the match.
Hingis, the 1998 tournament winner, will face Black in the next round. Henin will face No. 18 Daniela Hantuchova, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 winner over 16th-seeded Barbara Schett. |
