| MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- World No. 1 and top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt will have to beat defending champion Andre Agassi or Pete Sampras, the holder of 13 Grand Slam titles, just to reach the Australian Open final.
Agassi, aiming for a third consecutive Australian Open crown; Sampras; ninth-seeded Marat Safin, and 19-year-old American Andy Roddick, seeded 13th; are in the same bracket after the draw Friday.
Former No. 1 Martina Hingis will have to beat both Serena and Venus Williams to set up a decider against the defending tournament champion, top-seeded Jennifer Capriati.
Hingis, who won consecutive Australian Opens from 1997-99 and figured in the 2000 and 2001 finals, overcame both Williams sisters last year before losing to Capriati in the final. It was Capriati's first Grand Slam title. |
