Hingis, Davenport win, Capriati Loses
Friday, October, 12 14:29:08 2001 PT

FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Jennifer Capriati's string of disappointing results at the $565,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix continued Friday.

Capriati, the second seed, failed to take advantage of her one-set lead, falling to Sandrine Testud of France in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Testud will meet No. 6 Justine Henin in Saturday's semifinals, while No. 1 Martina Hingis will battle No. 3 Lindsay Davenport.

Capriati fell in her first quarterfinals appearance here in five attempts. The American suffered second-round exits in 1996 and 1999, and first-round eliminations in 1997 and 2000.

By contrast, Testud won the 1998 Filderstadt title and reached the semifinals the following year.

The winner of this year's Australian and French Opens, Capriati lost to Testud for the first time in three meetings in 2001. The 25-year-old handled Testud in straight sets in the round of 16 at the German Open claycourt event in May and Wimbledon in July.

Testud will try to capture her fourth career WTA title. The 29-year-old lifted her third trophy last month, when she defeated Henin in the final of the Big Island Championships at Waikoloa, Hawaii.

Henin of Belgium rallied after dropping the first set to edge Anke Huber of Germany, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-5.

Henin has captured three titles this year and reached her first career Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, falling to Venus Williams. The 19-year-old beat Testud in January to win the Canberra International.

Huber, who is retiring following the 2002 Australian Open, failed to reach her sixth semifinal in 11 appearances at Filderstadt. The veteran won this tournament in 1991 and 1994.

Hingis overwhelmed Tatiana Panova of Russia, 6-1, 6-2, as she looks for her third straight Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title and fifth overall.

The Swiss star, however, is winless in her last 12 tournaments -- the longest drought of her career. In addition, Hingis must reach the final here to hold on to her No. 1 world ranking. Otherwise, Capriati, despite her surprise exit, will end Hingis' 73-week run atop the list.

Davenport cruised in the final four with a 6-4, 6-2 win over fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo of France.

Davenport, the 1998 winner, is seeking her fifth victory of the year. The American returned from a three-month absence due to a right knee bruise to claim her third and fourth titles at Eastbourne and Los Angeles.

Hingis and Davenport will clash for the 24th time on Saturday. The American leads their lifetime series, 13-10, but Hingis has taken three of the last five. In their only previous match at Filderstadt, Hingis won in three sets in the 1996 semifinals.

The winner collects $90,000.
