| FILDERSTADT, Germany (AP) -- Anna Kournikova struggled again in her comeback from a foot injury, committing 25 double-faults in her first-round loss Wednesday to Anne Kremer at the Porsche Grand Prix.
Kremer, a qualifier from Luxembourg, won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Kournikova is 0-3 in singles since playing in Leipzig, Germany, last month.
``Both of us made a lot of mistakes -- it wasn't a very good match,'' said Kremer, who next plays third-seeded Lindsay Davenport. ``She really couldn't serve today.''
Martina Hingis, seeking to protect her No. 1 ranking, was blanked in the first set but rallied to beat Magdalena Maleeva 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.
Kournikova later teamed with Hingis to defeat Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-3, 6-4 in first-round doubles. Navratilova won a record six singles titles in Filderstadt before retiring and now plays doubles occasionally.
Hingis has played 12 tournaments since February without a title, the longest drought of her career. The Swiss star could lose her No. 1 ranking this week to second-seeded Jennifer Capriati if she does poorly in this $565,000 event.
Capriati, the Australian and French Open champion, also reached the quarters, downing qualifier Miriam Oremans of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-4.
Hingis won her first pro title in Filderstadt in 1996 and has won the tournament four of the last five years, including the last two.
This was the first time this year Hingis failed to win a game in a set.
``I really didn't know what I should do to win a point,'' Hingis said. ``She was hitting some great shots and I was making too many mistakes.''
``But then I thought that I've won here four times and I just tried to keep the ball in play and hope that something will happen,'' she added.
In the sixth game of the second set, the 16th-ranked Bulgarian dropped her serve for the first time.
``I caught her wrong-footed with a few shots and I got the break I needed,'' Hingis said.
Hingis broke again in the opening game of the third as Maleeva began making mistakes. Hingis fought off one break point while serving for the match. She then clinched it when Maleeva's return sailed long.
Kournikova stayed off the tour between February and July because of a stress fracture in her left foot. In late July, her first comeback attempt ended after one singles match and four doubles.
She blamed her poor performance Wednesday on her long layoff.
``I was playing well from the baseline and I was moving a lot better,'' she said. ``But my serve was a problem.'' |
