| MOSCOW (Reuters) - Top seed and defending champion Martina Hingis suffered a shocking 6-2, 6-2 defeat by Elena Dementieva in the Kremlin Cup quarter-finals Friday.
The eighth-seeded Russian avenged last year's loss to Hingis at the same stage of the tournament, by scoring her first career win over the Swiss world number one.
Hingis, who also struggled in her previous match against Czech qualifier Sandra Kleinova, ranked 135th in the world, was bundled out of the $2.185 million tournament in just one hour and 10 minutes.
Hingis held her serve only once in the first set and was broken four times in the second.
In Saturday's semifinal, Dementieva will face fellow Russian wild card Anastasia Myskina, who upset Austria's Barbara Schett 6-4, 6-2 earlier Friday. |
