| CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) -- Anna Kournikova, playing her first tournament since February, returned with Martina Hingis to win a doubles match on opening night of the Acura Classic.
Kournikova and Hingis, who is ranked No. 1 in the world in singles, defeated Leizel Huber of South Africa and Laura Montalvo of Argentina 6-1, 6-1 Monday night.
Kournikova said she was impressed that a sellout crowd watched the match so early in the week.
The Russian had been recovering from a stress fracture in her left foot since losing a quarterfinal match in the Gaz de France in Paris to eventual tournament winner Amelie Mauresmo.
Although Kournikova has yet to win a singles title on the women's tour, she and Hingis have a string of nine doubles victories in 11 tournaments since they teamed for the 1999 Australian Open. They have a 45-2 record.
Hingis, top seeded in singles here and No. 1 in WTA rankings, will debut in singles Tuesday against Lilia Osterloh of Columbus, Ohio. Kournikova will play a night match against Nicole Pratt of Australia.
The field includes the top five players in the world: Hingis; Jennifer Capriati, moved up to second by the WTA on Monday; No. 3 Venus Williams; No. 4 Lindsey Davenport; and No. 5 Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
In singles on Monday, Sandra Cacic beat Kim-Anh Nguyen 6-2, 6-3; Luxembourg's Anne Kremer beat Zimbabwe's Cara Black 6-2, 6-1; Lilia Osterloh eliminated France's Virginia Razzano 3-6, 6-0, 6-2; Australia's Nicole Pratt beat New Zealand's Pavlina Nola 6-3, 6-2; and Chanda Rubin routed Russia's Tatiana Panova 6-0, 6-3.
Russia's Nadia Petrova advanced when Italy's Tathiana Garbin withdrew because of a rib injury. Pedrova led 5-2 when Garbin retired. |
