| NEW YORK (AP) -- Led by Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams, the top 104 ranked women in the world have entered the U.S. Open, to be played Aug. 27-Sept. 9.
Capriati, the Australian and French Open champion, made her best showing in the Open 10 years ago at 15, when she lost in the semifinals to Monica Seles. Williams is the defending champion and recently won at Wimbledon for the second straight year.
Five other former champions also are entered, including Seles; Martina Hingis, ranked No. 1 in the world; Lindsay Davenport, who lost to Williams in last year's final; Venus' sister, Serena Williams, who won in 1999; and Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario, the 1994 winner.
The total women's field will be 128. Sixteen qualifiers will be added, along with eight wild-cards. |
