PARIS (Ticker) -- Another trip to Roland Garros, another early exit
for American Pete Sampras.
Sampras, the owner of a record 13 Grand Slam titles but not one French
Open crown, saw his futility at Roland Garros continue Thursday after losing
to Galo Blanco of Spain, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-2, in a second-round match.
World No. 1 Martina Hingis, who also needs a French Open title to complete
her career Grand Slam, has yet to break a sweat in her title chase. On
Thursday, she needed just 42 minutes to dispose of Colombian Catalina Castano,
6-1, 6-0.
The top seed from Switzerland has needed just 100 minutes on court to
book her spot in the third round, dropping just two games along the way.
The win leaves Hingis on a semifinal collision course with American
fourth seed Jennifer Capriati, who romped into the next round with a 6-2,
6-1 dismantling of Italy's Tathiana Garbin.
Third seed Andre Agassi, already in possession of one of the trophies
Hingis and Sampras desperately covet, underlined his intentions of adding
another to his trophy case by crushing Frenchman Julien Boutter, 6-3, 6-2,
6-2.
While Sampras once again leaves Paris empty-handed, the former top-ranked
player warned before departing that he was not about to give up his quest.
But the man considered by most as one of the greatest to have ever swung
a racket conceded that time was no longer on his side.
"There's still time," the 29-year-old Sampras said. "I've got plenty
of years left. But as the years go by it gets more and more difficult.
I'll try to figure it out and maybe try something different.
"I feel like over the course of my career I've done everything I could
possibly do to do well here. You need some breaks, you need to be playing
well. All you can do is keep trying and come back next year."
Since 1996, when he produced his best French result by reaching the
semifinals, Sampras has failed to advance past the third round.
