| CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- A rematch of this
year's Australian Open is set after top seed Martina Hingis and No. 2 Jennifer
Capriati cruised into the final of the Family Circle Cup tennis event on
Saturday.
Hingis continued her domination of third seed Conchita Martinez of Spain
with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the semifinal. Hingis has won 11 of 14 career
matches against the Spaniard.
Capriati did her part to set up a showdown with Hingis in Sunday's final
by rolling past unseeded Marlene Weingartner of Germany, 6-0, 6-2, in less
than an hour.
Hingis lost to Capriati in the final at Melbourne in January but will
look to avenge that defeat in search for her WTA Tour-leading fourth title
of the year and 39th career. She won here in 1997 and 1999.
Hingis had reached 10 consecutive championship matches and won seven
titles before being stopped last month in the semifinals at Indian Wells,
California by Belgium's Kim Clijsters. The 20-year-old from Switzerland
has compiled an impressive 39-5 record this year.
Last week, Hingis suffered a quarterfinal loss to Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
at the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island. It marked the
first time since August 2000 that she failed to advance to the semifinals.
Capriati bounced back this week in her first event since squandering
eight match points against fellow American Venus Williams in the final
of the Ericsson Open on April 1. She has not dropped a set in four wins
here and will seek her 11th career singles title on Sunday.
Capriati, 25, completed a comeback from personal problems as a teenager
by defeating three of the world's top four players en route to her first
Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. She also was runner-up at Oklahoma
City in February and has won 22 0f 26 matches in 2001.
First prize at this Tier I event is $178,000.
