MIAMI (AP) -- Martina Hingis' convicted stalker wants help from a legal
celebrity on his appeal.
But he told a judge Friday that he can't afford to pay anyone unless
he gets out of jail to check on investments.
Dubravko Rajcevic, who has been diagnosed as delusional, wrote defense
lawyer Roy Black and spoke with another criminal defender, Charles White,
about appealing his two-year jail sentence and stalking conviction for
pursuing the Swiss tennis star across the Atlantic.
``Things are never quite black or white,'' Circuit Judge Kevin Emas
said, drawing laughter from a courtroom filled with prisoners like Rajcevic.
``That's exactly how my case proceeded,'' the defendant said. ``It started
white and it turned black.''
Black's office acknowledged receiving Rajcevic's letter but said there
has been no contact between the inmate and the attorney who defended TV
sportscaster Marv Albert and William Kennedy Smith.
White said he would be willing to take the appeal if the county paid
the bill.
Emas is waiting to see if the public defender's office declares a conflict
in Rajcevic's case, as it did for trial, before determining how to proceed.
Meanwhile, Rajcevic waived his motion to be released on bond while pursuing
his appeal when he realized he would be transferred to an immigration jail
for deportation rather than go free.
Prosecutor Chris Calkin said he believes Rajcevic has money to pay for
an appeal but offered no evidence. He also said there's no evidence that
Rajcevic divorced his wife in Australia and said he might still have an
interest in their house.
Defense attorney Frank Abrams, who filed a notice of appeal Thursday,
said he understood the house was taken in foreclosure when Rajcevic stopped
paying the mortgage and started pursuing Hingis in 1999.
The Croatian-born naval architect said he invested large amounts of
money two to three years ago in Indonesia, Malaysia and China but has not
received any return on his investments.
Rajcevic was arrested at the Ericsson Open near Miami last year after
showing up at Hingis' Zurich home with flowers, calling her during tournaments,
sending her love letters and getting the address of her second home in
the Tampa Bay area. He never threatened her and never was known to have
a weapon.
