| AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis
of Switzerland meets Henrieta Nagyova of the Czech Republic Thursday in
the third round of the $565,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships claycourt
tournament.
Hingis crushed Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain, 6-2, 6-1 on Wednesday
after receiving a first-round bye.
The 15th-seeded Nagyova, who also had a first-round bye, needed to rally
to beat American Lilia Osterloh, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in her second-round
match.
Hingis has captured all WTA Tour Tier I tournaments and three of the
four Grand Slams but has not captured this event, which has been won by
all the other No. 1 players in the last 20 years.
Hingis lost to Venus Williams in the semifinals at the Ericsson Open
in Miami two weeks ago but has three titles this season and a 34-4 match
record.
Third-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia meets countrywoman Elena Likhovtseva
Thursday in a third-round match.
Dementieva has won 11 of her last 14 matches and beat France's Natalie
Dechy, 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday. She reached her first WTA Tour final at the
Mexican Open last month and followed with a quarterfinal effort at Indian
Wells and a semifinal showing at Miami.
Likhovtseva, the 16th seed, downed Rosanna De Los Rios of Paraguay,
6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.
Fourth-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa will face No. 13 Jelena
Dokic of Yugoslavia in a third-round match.
Coetzer was leading 7-5, 3-0 when her opponent Tatiana Panova was forced
to retire on Wednesday due to dehydration.
Dokic defeated Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, 7-5, 6-3 on Tuesday.
Sixth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France hopes to continue her roll when
she plays American Lisa Raymond. Mauresmo extended her winning streak to
11 matches with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over American Kristina Brandi on Wednesday.
She won titles in her homeland at Paris and Nice in February.
Raymond, the 12th seed, posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over countrywoman Jennifer
Hopkins on Tuesday.
Seventh-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario faces No. 9 Paola Suarez of Argentina
in the Round of 16. The winner will likely meet Hingis in the quarterfinals.
Sanchez-Vicario, a two-time champion fresh off winning her first title
of the year at Porto, Portugal last week, continued her good form with
a second-round victory over Pavlina Nola of Bulgaria, 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Suarez prevailed in a tough second-round match against Anastasia Myskina
of Russia, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5.
Americans Meghann Shaughnessy and Meilen Tu meet in a third-round match.
Shaughnessy, the 10th seed, rallied to beat Sandra Cacic, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5
and Tu defeated Erika De Lone, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In other third-round matches on Thursday, Silvia Farina Elia of Italy
faces Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina and American Jill Craybas plays
Nadia Petrova of Russia.
Farina Elia upset second-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain, 6-4, 6-1
on Wednesday.
It was the fourth straight loss for Martinez, who last won at the Australian
Open.
