| WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- The women's final of
the U.S. Open Tennis Championships is moving to prime time.
The United States Tennis Association and CBS Sports announced on Tuesday
that the women's title will begin at 8 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September
8, making it the first Grand Slam event to have a prime time final on network
television.
"This is a significant breakthrough for the coverage of tennis on television,"
said USTA chief executive Arlen Kantarian. "The sport is certainly ready
for prime time, and this change will place the U.S. Open in the same company
as the world's top sports and entertainment events."
The decision will likely be a profitable one for the USTA, which will
now have two separate admissions. In past years, the women's finals and
men's semifinals were staged in the same session as part of "Super Saturday."
The men's semifinals will continue to take place on Saturday afternoon
and the men's final will remain in its traditional spot of Sunday at 4:30
p.m. EDT.
The new schedule is on a one-year trial basis.
Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport in last year's women's final.
