| DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- World No. 1 Martina
Hingis survived a scare from Sandrine Testud of France before winning 6-3,
5-7, 6-4 in the Dubai Open Thursday.
The victory moved the top-seeded Hingis into the semifinals.
No. 2 seed Mary Pierce wasn't as fortunate. She was beaten 6-3, 6-1
by Australian qualifier Rachel McQuillan.
``I am happy to pull it off,'' the relieved Hingis said. ``Holding serve
(in the last set) was the breakthrough.
``She's (Testud) a big fighter.''
McQuillan, who contemplated retiring from professional tennis two years
ago after a loss of form, was on top of her game in beating Pierce in 53
minutes on center court.
McQuillan was accurate with her service game, getting 86 percent of
her first serves in to frustrate Pierce, who admitted that her game was
flat.
``I have no excuses, Rachel played very well,'' said Pierce, the French
Open champion. ``I played better today than in my previous game but Rachel
didn't miss many shots.''
Pierce, playing with Barbara Schett of Austria, later retired from a
doubles quarterfinal match against Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia and Caroline
Vis of the Netherlands after losing the first set 6-1.
Pierce was bothered by tendinitis in both ankles.
Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, the No. 7 seed, also reached the semifinals
with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over 16-year-old Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia.
No. 3 seed Nathalie Tauziat of France became the other semifinalist,
beating wild card entrant Selima Sfar of Tunisia 7-6 (6-3), 5-7, 6-3.
