| DOHA, QATAR (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis advanced
to her fourth straight final Saturday and will vie for her second title
of the year when she takes on No. 3 Sandrine Testud in the Qatar Open final.
Both posted semifinal victories in less than one hour on Saturday. Hingis
rolled past fourth seed Barbara Schett of Austria, 6-1, 6-2, and Testud
crushed unseeded Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-1.
Hingis improved her season record to 20-2 and has not dropped a set
in three matches this week.
"I played my best match here this week today," Hingis said. "I knew
I had to be aggressive against Barbara. Otherwise she would move me around
the court."
At the Australian Open, Hingis fell to Jennifer Capriati in the final
after defeating sisters Venus and Serena Williams in her previous two matches.
One week later, Hingis advanced to the final at the Pan Pacific Open
in Tokyo, but lost to world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in three sets.
Prior to those runner-up finishes, Hingis led Switzerland to the Hopman
Cup title and won the adidas International in Sydney the following week.
The 20-year-old will seek her 37th career singles title on Sunday.
Testud, a finalist at Canberra, Australia last month, has not won a
title since 1998 at Filderstadt, Germany. The 28-year-old Frenchwoman's
first career title came at Palermo in 1997.
Hingis has dominated Testud throughout their career, winning all 12
of their previous meetings, including all six last year. This will be the
first women's final in the Middle East.
"I have played Sandrine many times," Hingis said. "I have a very good
record against her and I don't want to lose three finals in a row. I am
hungry to win."
First prize at this inaugural hardcourt event is $27,000.
