| MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (TICKER) -- Top-ranked Martina Hingis
looks to continue her dominant run through the women's draw when she plays
her third-round match Saturday at the Australian Open Tennis Championships.
Hingis has spent a total of 79 minutes on the court over the first two
rounds as she guns for a fourth Australian Open title in five years. The
top seed from Switzerland meets Virginie Razzano of France for a spot in
the round of 16.
Sisters Venus and Serena Williams, who are in the top half of the draw
along with Hingis, also play their third-round matches.
Venus Williams, the reigning Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion, attempts
to extend her winning streak on hard courts to 28 matches when she faces
Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic.
The sixth-seeded Serena Williams takes on Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand,
with a possible quarterfinal meeting against Hingis looming and a semifinal
showdown with her younger sister down the line.
On the men's side, the most intriguing third-round matchup features
seventh seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia taking on former world No. 1 Carlos
Moya of Spain.
Hewitt survived a five-set encounter in the first round before rallying
from big deficits in the first two rounds of his straight-sets win over
Germany's Tommy Haas in the second round.
Moya, a runner-up here in 1997, has not dropped a set in his first two
matches, including a victory over former world No. 1 Marcelo Rios in the
first round.
Hewitt won his only meeting with Moya last year at Indian Wells, California
in three sets.
In other men's action, fourth seed and 2000 semifinalist Magnus Norman
of Sweden encounters Alex Calatrava of Spain.
Fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, the 1999 champion and 2000
runner-up, takes on former NCAA champion Chris Woodruff of the United States.
Kafelnikov lost just five games in his first-round win, but needed five
sets to overcome Germany's Nicolas Kiefer in the second round on Thursday.
Also, 10th seed Wayne Ferreira of South Africa goes against Andreas
Vinciguerra of Sweden; No. 15 Arnaud Clement of France battles former world
junior champion Roger Federer of Switzerland; and No. 16 Sebastien Grosjean
of France meets Thomas Johansson of Sweden.
Hard-serving Greg Rusedski of Britain, fresh off his five-set elimination
of top seed Gustvao Kuerten on Thursday, vies for a berth in the round
of 16 against German qualifier Lars Burgsmuller.
Hingis has lost a total of three games in her first two matches as she
vies for her first major since winning here in 1999. Last year, she failed
to go an entire year without a Grand Slam singles title for the first time
since 1996. Hingis was denied a fourth straight title in Melbourne with
a loss to Lindsay Davenport in last year's final.
Hingis is 9-0 this season after helping Switzerland win the Hopman Cup
in Perth and capturing the adidas International last week in Sydney.
Venus Williams bounced back from her three-set struggle in the first
round by defeating fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy in straight sets
on Thursday. She has not lost a Grand Slam match since falling to Arantxa
Sanchez-Vicario in the quarterfinals of the French Open.
Among other seeded women, No. 7 Mary Pierce of France, the 1994 winner
and reigning French Open champion, takes on Paola Suarez of Argentina,
and ninth seed Elena Dementieva of Russia, who saved a match point in her
second-round win, battles Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic.
Tenth seed and two-time semifinalist Amanda Coetzer of South Africa
goes against Marlene Weingartner of Germany, and No. 13 Amelie Mauresmo
of France, the 1999 runner-up, faces Iva Majoli of Croatia, who has battled
injuries the last few years since winning the French Open in 1997.
Headlining Friday's third-round winners on the men's side were second
seed Marat Safin of Russia, third seed and two-time champion Pete Sampras
and fellow American Andre Agassi, the sixth seed and defending champion.
For the women, defending champion Lindsay Davenport and four-time winner
Monica Seles of the United States, as well as eighth seed Anna Kournikova
of Russia and 12th-seeded American Jennifer Capriati advanced to the fourth
round.
