| PERTH, AUSTRALIA (TICKER) -- Top-ranked female player
Martina Hingis teamed with Roger Federer to lift Switzerland into the Hopman
Cup final with a 2-1 victory over defending champion South Africa on Friday.
Hingis gave Switzerland the early lead by crushing Amanda Coetzer, 6-1,
6-0, but Wayne Ferreira leveled the series by outdueling Federer, 6-3,
3-6, 6-3. But it was the Swiss team that prevailed in the deciding doubles
match as Hingis and Federer teamed up to defeat Coetzer and Ferreira, 6-2,
6-3.
Switzerland, which went undefeated in the round robin, will face the
third-seeded American team of Monica Seles and Jan-Michael Gambill in Saturday's
final, with the winning country taking home the $240,000 first prize.
The 20-year-old Hingis remained unbeaten in 13 career matches at the
Hopman Cup and has won 22 of her last 23 singles matches overall, dating
to last season.
Hingis will be appearing in her second Hopman Cup final. She teamed
with Marc Rosset in 1996 but lost to Croatia in the final.
Federer, 19, came close to winning his first tournament in 2000, stretching
Rosset and Thomas Enqvist to the limit in finals at Marseille and Basel,
respectively.
South Africa, seeded fourth, finished 2-1 in the round robin.
Seles and Gambill clinched a spot in the final on Thursday by sweeping
Belgium, 3-0, and also finish unbeaten in the round robin.
The United States and Switzerland each will seek its second Hopman Cup
championship. The Americans won the title in 1997, while Switzerland took
the title in 1992.
The Hopman Cup is one of several warmup events for the Australian Open,
the first Grand Slam of the year.
