| PERTH, Australia (AP) -- Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova
have split as doubles partners.
Hingis, the world's No. 1 player, said she wants to cut back on her
doubles commitments this season. The Swiss star plans to play doubles with
Monica Seles at the Australian Open and a warmup tournament in Sydney next
week.
``We will see how it goes,'' Hingis said.
Hingis and Kournikova reportedly clashed during an exhibition singles
match in Chile last match. However, Hingis said their relationship is intact.
``The only thing is I want to be more independent,'' Hingis said from
the Hopman Cup. ``I have played a lot of tennis and I was very tired at
the end of the season. Now I just don't want to play that much doubles.
``It was a lot of fun playing with her and we made the championships
and we won in the end, but I just don't want an all-year partner.''
Hingis and Kournikova won the Australian Open doubles crown in 1999,
Kournikova's only Grand Slam victory. They made the final of the French
Open the same year in which they were beaten by the Williams sisters.
Seles said Hingis asked her last month to be her doubles partner.
``I'd love to, what an opportunity for me to play with someone like
her,'' she said. ``We both want to focus on our singles and make doubles
for fun. We are very loose in the commitment.
``If she doesn't feel like she wants to play, she'll tell me and vice
versa.''
