Hingis leads Switzerland to victory
Saturday, Dec 30 22:43:04 PT

PERTH, Australia (AP) -- Martina Hingis beat Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-1 on Sunday as top-seeded Switzerland swept Thailand 3-0 in the opening match of the Hopman Cup.

In the other matches in the Australian Open tuneup event, Roger Federer beat Paradorn Srichaphan 6-4, 6-2, and Hingis and Federer routed Tanasugarn and Srichaphan 6-0, 6-1 in doubles.

``I was in Florida working out for the last three weeks and I felt very good going out there,'' Hingis said. ``I had a month off and just hoped I could continue the way I finished the year.

``I like to come in (to the net) in the indoor season, and when you feel good about your physical condition, and against players like Tamarine, I should be trying out different things.''

The U.S. team of Monica Seles and Jan-Michael Gambill will begin play Monday against Slovakia.
