NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Top seed Martina Hingis kept her name off the list
of upset victims at the Chase Championships with a three-set quarterfinal
victory over No. 6 Nathalie Tauziat in the $2 million event tonight.
Hingis overcame a momentary lapse in tactics to get by Tauziat, 6-1,
6-7 (2-7), 6-2, and advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden
for the fourth time in five years. She awaits the winner of tonight's second
match between fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain and No. 7 Anna Kournikova
of Russia.
Hingis, Martinez, Kournikova and No. 3 Monica Seles are the only seeds
remaining after second seed Lindsay Davenport was ousted by Elena Dementieva
on Wednesday night.
After breezing through the first set in 21 minutes, Hingis stopped dictating
play and began pushing the ball. This played right into Tauziat's hands
as the 33-year-old Frenchwoman ripped Hingis' serves for return winners
and attacked the net. She dominated the tiebreaker, winning the first five
points.
But in the deciding set, Hingis added pace and purpose to her shots.
She took a 5-0 lead and broke serve to close out her fifth win in as many
meetings with Tauziat in a little over 90 minutes.
