| VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) -- Martina Hingis won her 13th straight
match since losing in the U.S. Open, defeating Russian qualifier Elena
Bovina 6-4, 6-1 Wednesday in the Advanta Championships.
Jennifer Capriati was tested but beat Meghann Shaugnessy 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
She will next meet Julie Halard-Decugis, an opening-round winner over Greta
Arn.
Third-seeded Conchita Martinez also advanced Wednesday by defeating
Canada's Renata Kolbovic, 6-1, 6-3.
Hingis, the top-ranked player, faced a 17-year-old player who at 6-foot-5
is one of the tallest on the tour.
Hingis was broken early in the first set and was tied 4-4 before taking
control.
``In the second set, I started to read her serve,'' the Swiss star said.
``I knew I had to be more aggressive.''
Hingis, who had a first-round bye, has won three straight tournaments.
Her last loss was to Venus Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals in September.
Hingis, who won this tournament in 1997 and was runner-up last year,
will next play the winner of the Anna Kournikova-Nicole Pratt match.
The eighth-seeded Capriati had to overcome some sloppy play in the first
two sets. She broke Shaugnessy's serve in the third set to make it 3-3
and then broke again.
``She was serving well and was tough to play,'' Capriati said. ``I was
glad to pull it out. I thought I might have lost it at the end of the second
set, but I didn't quit.''
