| FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis
of Switzerland stormed into the final of the $535,000 Porsche Tennis Grand
Prix with a sound victory in today's semifinal.
Hingis crushed No. 4 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, 6-1, 6-0, and
will face unseeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium on Sunday. Clijsters, who is
making her debut at this tournament entered as a wild card, rallied to
beat third seed Nathalie Tauziat of France, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Hingis extended her winning streak against Sanchez-Vicario to 15 matches,
dating back to 1996. Today's win was the 61st of the year for the 20-year-old
Swiss.
It has been a rather easy week for Hingis, who has lost just seven games
in her three matches after receiving a first round bye. She is seeking
her fourth title here in five years and the sixth in 2000, which would
tie red-hot Venus Williams for the WTA Tour lead.
Hingis lost to Williams in the U.S. Open semifinal last month, where
she was two points from victory before collapsing and losing four successive
games.
Clijsters will be aiming for her third WTA Tour title. She won her first
career title at Luxembourg last year when she was 16 years, 3 months and
18 days old. Her second title came at the ITF tournament in Sheffield,
England.
First prize is $87,000.
