| FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Second seed Conchita
Martinez of Spain and third seed Nathalie Tauziat of France each overcame
slow starts today to advance to the quarterfinals of the $535,000 Porsche
Tennis Grand Prix.
Martinez got past Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, while
Tauziat upended Germany's Barbara Rittner, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, in second-round
play.
A winner of 32 singles crowns, Martinez is seeking her second title
of the year on German soil, capturing the German Open in May. She defeated
top-seeded Martina Hingis in the semifinals, her first win over a No. 1
player since topping Steffi Graf in 1993.
The 32-year-old Tauziat garnered her seventh singles championship at
the Paris Indoors in February. In May, she reached a career-high ranking
of No. 3, making her the oldest player to debut in the top three.
No. 8 seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium dispatched Asa Carlsson of
Sweden, 6-3, 6-1, but seventh-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States was
not as fortunate, falling to Nathalie Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France, 7-5,
1-6, 6-4.
Hingis, the top seed, reached the quarterfinals on Wednesday when Belgiun
qualifier Justine Henin retired with an inflamed right foot. Hingis is
seeking her fourth title in five years here.
Hingis was two points away from defeating eventual champion Venus Williams
in the U.S. Open semifinals, but lost four straight games to suffer a heartbreaking
defeat. She did not represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Sydney,
citing a hectic schedule that would not allow her to make the trip to Australia.
The 20-year-old Hingis has won five titles this season and has compiled
a 59-9 record. She defeated Mary Pierce, 6-4, 6-1, in last year's final
and also won this event in 1996-97.
First prize is $87,000.
