| TOKYO (Reuters) - With a little help from Amanda Coetzer, Martina Hingis
of Switzerland Friday moved to within one
victory of reclaiming her No. 1 ranking.
The second seeded Hingis posted a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal victory
over fifth seed Steffi Graf of Germany while Coetzer, the
seventh-seeded from South Africa, rallied to oust top seed and defending
champion Lindsay Davenport of the United States,
2-6, 6-4, 6-3, Friday at the $1.05 million Pan Pacific Open.
To regain the top ranking she lost last October, Hingis needs to defeat
third seed Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic in
Saturday's semifinal. Novotna won the first set, 7-5, over Natasha
Zvereva before the eighth-seeded Belarussian was forced to
retire due to eye problems.
Fourth seed Monica Seles of the United States eliminated No. 6 Anna
Kournikova of Russia, 7-5, 6-3, in the last quarterfinal.
Seles takes on Coetzer in Saturday's semifinals.
Hingis, fresh off her third Australian Open title, defeated Graf for
just the second time in eight meetings. In 1997, Hingis won in
a walkover over Graf in the final of this event. Walkovers, however,
do not count as official wins.
An injury again proved costly to the 29-year-old Graf, who needed treatment
to her left thigh after the fifth game of the deciding
set and dropped her serve the next game.
The 18-year-old Hingis lost her top ranking last year when she went
into a six-month title drought and Davenport went on a
tear, winning six titles, including the U.S. Open crown. Davenport
defeated Hingis in the finals here last year.
First prize is $150,000.
