Hingis, Williams seek semifinal berths at du Maurier tennis
Friday, August 18 10:23:21 PT

MONTREAL (TICKER) -- With an injured Lindsay Davenport out of the du Maurier Open, Martina Hingis and Serena Williams could move one step closer to a possible finals showdown with quarterfnal wins today at the $1.08 million tennis event.

Hingis, the defending champion, and Williams, the reigning U.S. Open champion, each have not dropped a set in reaching the round of eight. Today, Hingis will face eighth seed Sandrine Testud of France, and Williams will encounter No. 16 Amy Frazier of the United States.

Two Spanish seeded players also will vie for semifinal berths. Third seed Conchita Martinez will take on Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, and two-time champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, seeded seventh, meets qualifier Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgara tonight.

On Thursday, Hingis continued to roll through the draw as she dumped Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-4, for her 50th match win of the season.

Hingis has recorded mixed results in her first two summer hardcourt events. She reached the quarterfinals at the Acura Classic two weeks ago before falling to Williams last week in the semifinals of the estyle.com Classic in Los Angeles.

The Swiss teen has won four titles this season, including the Ericsson Open on hard courts, and has reached the finals at three other hardcourt events, including the Australian Open.

Last year, Hingis ended Monica Seles' four-year title reign at this event with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Testud earned her fifth meeting with Hingis this season after dumping No. 15 Chanda Rubin of the United States, 6-4, 6-1, on Thursday. The Frenchwoman has reached the quarterfinals in each of the four summer hardcourt events she has played.

Hingis has dominated the all-time series with Testud, going unbeaten in 10 matches.

Williams, seeded fourth, extended her winning streak to seven matches by overpowering No. 11 Anna Kournikova of Russia, 6-3, 6-2, on Thursday night.

The 18-year-old Williams is trying to extend the dominance that she and her sister have displayed over the last six weeks. Venus Williams captured three straight events before Serena extended the sisters' streak to four with last week's triumph in Los Angeles.

Frazier recorded two three-set wins Thursday to advance to the round of eight. After completing a rain-suspended second-round victory over Gala Leon Garcia of Spain earlier in the day, Frazier upset sixth seed Anke Huber of Germany to reach the quarters.

The 26-year-old Frazier has put together a consistent summer hardcourt season, reaching at least the quarterfinals in each of her four events. She upset Hingis at San Diego two weeks ago en route to the semifinals, where she lost to Serena's older sister Venus. Frazier also lost to Venus Williams in the quarterfinals at Stanford, California three weeks ago.

Davenport, the second seed, was forced to retire with a left foot injury in the first set of her match with Maleeva on Thursday.

This tournament began in 1892 and offers a $166,000 first prize.

It is the last year the event will be known as the du Maurier Open because of recently passed laws barring tobacco companies from sponsoring sports events. Next year it will be called the Roger's AT&T Canada Cup.
