| MONTREAL (TICKER) -- Four of the top seven players in
the world, including top-ranked Martina Hingis and No. 2 Lindsay Davenport,
seek quarterfinal berths today at the $1.08 million du Maurier Open tennis
event.
Coming off an impressive second-round win on Wednesday, Hingis continues
defense of her title against Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic.
Davenport, seeded second, looks to move one step closer to her first
title since April when she meets qualifier Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria,
who upset ninth seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa on Wednesday.
Seeking her second straight singles title, reigning U.S. Open champion
Serena Williams has a tough third-round opponent in No. 11 Anna Kournikova
of Russia as the two teenagers square off tonight for the first time.
In other third-round action, third seed Conchita Martinez of Spain meets
10th seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France; seventh seed and two-time champion
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain faces No. 13 Jennifer Capriati of the
United States, the 1991 winner; and eighth seed Sandrine Testud of France
battles No. 15 Chanda Rubin of the United States.
Also, Silvija Talaja of Croatia goes against Anne Kremer of Luxembourg
in a matchup of unseeded players. Kremer eliminated fifth seed Nathalie
Tauziat of France in the second round.
One second-round match will be completed as No. 16 Amy Frazier of the
United Sates and Gala Leon Garcia resume in the third set with Frazier
leading, 3-6, 6-2, 4-3. The winner will take on sixth seed Anke Huber of
Germany later today.
Hingis crushed qualifier Nadejda Petrova of Russia, 6-1, 6-3, on Wednesday.
Hingis has had mixed results in her first two summer hardcourt events.
She reached the quarterfinals at the Acura Classic two weeks ago before
falling to Williams last week in the semifinals.
The Swiss teen has won four titles this season, including the Ericsson
Open on hard courts, and has reached the finals at three other hardcourt
events, including the Australian Open.
Last year, Hingis ended Monica Seles' four-year reign at this event
with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Davenport overcame a foot problem to pull out a three-set win over Belgian
qualifier Justine Henin on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Davenport failed to win each of the three summer hardcourt
events in her home state of California. She lost to Serena Williams' older
sister, Venus, in the final at Stanford, California three weeks ago. Davenport
followed that with a second-round loss to Kournikova at San Diego before
falling to Serena in Sunday's final of the estyle.com Classic in Los Angeles.
Davenport has won two titles this season, both on hard courts. One of
those came at the Australian Open in January.
Serena Williams, seeded fourth, extended her winning streak to six matches
with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Patty Schnyder of Switzerland on
Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Serena Williams is trying to extend the dominance that
she and her sister have displayed over the last six weeks. Venus Williams
captured three straight events before Serena extended the sisters' streak
to four with last week's triumph in Los Angeles.
This tournament began in 1892 and offers a $166,000 first prize.
It is the last year the event will be known as the du Maurier Open because
of recently passed laws barring tobacco companies from sponsoring sports
events. Next year it will be called the Roger's AT&T Canada Cup.
