Hingis gets revenge against Frazier

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- It was sweet revenge for Martina Hingis.

Upset by Amy Frazier last week in the quarterfinals of the Acura Classic, Hingis turned the tables Friday, breezing to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Frazier in the quarterfinals of the estyle.com Classic.

Hingis, the No. 1 player in the world and top seed in the tournament at the Manhattan Country Club, needed only 53 minutes to beat Frazier, the 20th-ranked player in the world.

Hingis next faces defending champion and fifth-seeded Serena Williams in Saturday's semifinals.

In another quarterfinal match Friday, Elena Dementieva of Russia rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lisa Raymond in a matchup of unseeded players.

The 18-year-old Dementieva faces the winner of Friday night's quarterfinal match between No. 2 Lindsay Davenport and No. 8 Sandrine Testud of France in Saturday's other semifinal.

Williams, who begins defense of her U.S. Open championship later this month, reached the semifinals with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over No. 4 Conchita Martinez of Spain.

The finals will be played Sunday with the singles champion earning $87,000 and the runnerup collecting $43,500.

The 19-year-old Hingis has now beaten Frazier, 27, five times in six lifetime meetings. This match was never in doubt.

``I was excited to go out there and play her,'' Hingis said. ``I had nothing to lose, and she had to prove something. It worked out the way I wanted. I was more aggressive, and I was reading her game more. I had learned her strengths and weaknesses.''

Frazier won this tournament in 1994; Hingis is trying to win it for the first time in four tries.

``I knew today would be a totally different match (than last week),'' Frazier said. ``She doesn't make too many errors, she didn't miss too many. She just played really well. She's always so tough, she makes you win every shot.''

Frazier didn't manage to win too many in this match. The only games she won were the third and sixth of the first set and third of the second set.

Dementieva, playing in this tournament for the first time, needed 1 hour, 38 minutes to eliminate Raymond, doing so by winning 12 of the match's final 17 games.

``The last time I played her, I won, so I know how to play her,'' Dementieva said. ``I think I'm going to win the tournament, and I say, `Why not?' ''

A victory in the $535,000 event would be the first ever for Dementieva.

Dementieva led the 27-year-old Raymond 5-2 in the deciding set before losing two straight games. However, Dementieva held service at love to end the match.
