| LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Top-ranked Martina Hingis only
had to wait one week to have a chance at avenging her most recent loss.
Hingis will face American Amy Frazier in a quarterfinal match for the
second straight week today at the $535,000 estyle.com Classic.
Second seed Lindsay Davenport looks to move one step closer toward her
first title since April when the California native faces eighth seed Sandrine
Testud of France tonight.
American Lisa Raymond, the No. 1 doubles player in the world, attempts
to reach her second singles semifinal of the season when she encounters
Elena Dementieva of Russia.
On Wednesday night, Hingis rebounded from her loss to Frazier at last
week's Acura Classic in San Diego by pulling out a three-set win over former
finalist Chanda Rubin.
Hingis has won four titles this season, including the Ericsson Open
on hard courts, and has reached the finals at three other hardcourt events,
including the Australian Open.
Frazier, the 1994 champion, set up a quarterfinal rematch with Hingis
by eliminating seventh seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain in three sets
on Thursday. Ranked No. 20 in the world, the 27-year-old Frazier is seeking
her first singles title of the season and seventh of her career.
Davenport, a two-tiime champion here, struggled past Anne-Gaelle Sidot
of France in three sets to secure a semifinal berth.
Ranked No. 2 in the world behind Hingis, Davenport is seeking her third
title of the season and first since early April. Both of her tournament
wins have come on hard courts, including the Australian Open in January.
Her most recent title came at Indian Wells in her native California.
Davenport won this event in 1996 and 1998 and was a semifinalist last
year.
Testud also needed three sets to advance to the quarterfinals. She got
past Dominique Van Roost on Wednesday to advance to her third consecutive
quarterfinal, all in California.
Davenport is 8-2 lifetime against Testud, but three of their last four
meetings have gone three sets. In their most recent encounter, Davenport
prevailed in a third-set tiebreak at the Ericsson Open.
Defending champion Serena Williams, seeded fifth, advanced to the semifinals
on Thursday night with a three-set win over fifth seed and former champion
Conchita Martinez of Spain.
Williams, who will defend her U.S. Open title later this month, awaits
the Hingis-Frazier winner in Saturday's semifinals.
First prize is $87,000.
