| LONDON (TICKER) -- Sisters Venus and Serena Williams today
took different paths in setting up a semifinal clash at the Wimbledon Tennis
Championships.
Serena Williams did her part earlier in the day by dumping unseeded
fellow American Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 6-0, in only 40 minutes. But Venus had
to go the distance against top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland to create
the sibling semifinal.
In the first meeting between the two teenage rivals this season, Venus
Williams pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over the top-ranked player
to reach her first Wimbledon semifinal.
Thursday's match will be the fifth meeting between the Williams sisters
and second at a Grand Slam. Venus prevailed, 7-6, 6-1, in their first meeting
during the second round at the 1998 Australian Open and has won three of
four meetings overall.
Lindsay Davenport looks to move one step closer to successfully defending
her title, but she will have to get past former No. 1 player Monica Seles
in an all-American clash later today.
The Davenport-Seles winner will meet Australian teenager Jelena Dokic
in the semifinals.
One year after reaching her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal here,
the 17-year-old Dokic moved into her first semifinal at a major by beating
Magui Serna of Spain, 6-3, 6-2.
Davenport, seeded second, moved into the quarterfinals on Monday with
a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fellow American Jennifer Capriati.
After battling back problems in recent weeks and coming back from a
0-3 third-set deficit to win her second-round match, Davenport has looked
stronger in her last two matches as she has not lost a set.
Seles, the sixth seed, continued her quest for the only Grand Slam title
she has never won by beating ninth seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain,
6-3, 6-4, on Monday. A winner of nine Grand Slam titles, Seles' best showing
at the All-England Club was runner-up in 1992.
Davenport is 5-2 lifetime against Seles, having won the last five meetings.
In doubles, Martina Navratilova moved a step closer to a record-tying
20th Wimbledon title as she teamed with South Africa's Mariaan de Swardt
to dismiss Sanchez-Vicario and Amelie Mauresmo of France, 6-1, 6-1, to
reach the quarterfinals.
The 43-year-old Navratilova lost in the first round of mixed doubles
on Saturday. She is looking to tie Billie Jean King's mark for the most
Wimbledon titles.
The men's quarterfinals will take place on Wednesday as Pete Sampras
looks to move one step closer to a record 13th Grand Slam title.
Sampras, the top seed and six-time champion, will face fellow American
Jan-Michael Gambill.
Andre Agassi is the third American looking to secure a semifinal berth.
The 1992 champion and last year's runner-up, Agassi will face 10th seed
Mark Philippoussis of Australia.
In other quarterfinal matchups, No. 12 Patrick Rafter of Australia will
attempt to reach his second straight Wimbledon semifinal when he takes
on unseeded Alexander Popp of Germany.
Also, two unseeded players will square off when Byron Black of Zimbabwe
goes against Belarussian qualifier Vladimir Voltchkov.
