| BERLIN (TICKER) -- It had been four years since Conchita
Martinez had beaten Martina Hingis. In one match, Martinez's streak ended
along with Hingis' brief reign as the world's No. 1 player.
Martinez, seeded third, stopped an eight-match losing streak against
the Swiss teenager with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the defending champion
today to advance to the final of the $1.08 million German Open.
The Spaniard will seek her second title here in theee years and 32nd
of her career when she battles 10th seed Amanda Coetzer in Sunday's final.
Coetzer reached her first final of the season by defeating unseeded Joannette
Kruger, 6-2, 6-4, in an all-South African affair.
Hingis had her 13-match winning streak come to an end and will switch
positions with rival Lindsay Davenport for the second straight week in
the battle for No. 1. She suffered only her fourth loss in 37 matches this
season.
Martinez, 28, has not won a WTA Tour title since Sopot, Poland last
year. The former Wimbledon champion reached the semifinals at the Australian
Open before losing to Hingis and was runner-up at the Australian Hardcourt
Championships in January and the Bausch & Lomb Championships on clay
last month at Amelia Island, Florida.
The 28-year-old Coetzer has not appeared in a WTA Tour final since last
year at Oklahoma City. The diminutive South African has won six singles
titles but none since 1998 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
First prize at the 93rd German Open is $166,900. Only the U.S. Open
(113), Wimbledon (106) and the Canadian Open (100) have been held longer
among women's tournaments.
