| BERLIN (AP) -- Martina Hingis lost her No. 1 ranking again
today, just one week after taking it back from American rival Lindsay Davenport.
Spanish veteran Conchita Martinez beat Hingis, 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals
of the $1.08 million German Open, snapping the Swiss player's 13-match
winning streak player and dropping her back to No. 2 in next week's rankings.
Hingis, who also struggled in her previous two matches at the event,
let a 4-2 lead slip away in the second set before Martinez whipped a second
serve at her feet as she charged the net, ending a 1 hour, 42 minute match.
Martinez, the 1998 Wimbledon champion and winner of 31 career titles,
seemed to have an answer for everything Hingis tried as the two players
mixed drop shots, net attacks and long rallies.
``This was my best match this year,'' said Martinez. ``To play so well
and beat the No. 1 is really great.''
Defending champion Hingis, playing her fifth tournament this year with
the No. 1 ranking on the line, needed to reach the final to retain enough
points to stay ahead of Davenport.
She had grabbed back the top ranking from the American, who held it
five weeks, by winning last week's Betty Barclay Open.
Martinez will face the winner of an all-South African semifinal between
between Joannette Kruger and Amanda Coetzer in Sunday's final.
Martinez had lost eight straight matches to Hingis, but both her previous
wins against the Swiss teen-ager had come on clay.
