| HAMBURG, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Having already regained the
top spot in the world, Martina Hingis completed her week today with a victory
in the final at the $535,000 Betty Barclay Cup.
The 19-year-old Swiss rolled over fourth seed and three-time champion
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, 6-3, 6-3. Hingis recaptured the No. 1
ranking in the world from American Lindsay Davenport after winning her
semifinal over Germany's Anke Huber on Saturday. The rankings will be updated
on Monday.
By winning the $87,000 first prize, Hingis became the top earning player
on the tour with $1,123,039. She has captured four titles this year.
Hingis, seeded first, won at Hamburg for the second time and claimed
her 29th career title. She won this event in 1998.
Sanchez-Vicario, a 28-year-old veteran, made her record 12th appearance
at Hamburg, winning in 1993, 1994 and 1996. She has 27 career trophies
in 13 years on the WTA Tour.
