| MIAMI (TICKER) -- Martina Hingis of Switzerland snapped
a five-match winless streak against Lindsay Davenport today with a straight-sets
victory at the $5.725 million Ericsson Open.
In one of the hottest rivalries in tennis, Hingis dominated Davenport,
6-3, 6-2. Hingis jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Davenport fought
back to 4-3 before Hingis, who broke three times, overcame the rally to
put away the set.
Hingis kept her composure in the second set, breaking at 2-2 and never
looking back. She commited only 10 unforced errors compared to 40 by Davenport.
Hingis, the 1997 champion, received a $350,000 first-prize check.
"Lindsay is a great champion," she said. "She had a great run, congratulations
to her. She is taking over my No. 1 spot. I hope we will have many more
finals.
"It's nice to win a big one again. Lindsay has had only one loss this
year and she deserves to be No. 1."
Davenport lost for only the second time in 2000 but took over the No.
1 spot in the world rankings with her semifinal victory Thursday night.
The 23-year-old has won 24 of 26 matches this year, with her other loss
to Amelie Mauresmo in the Sydney International final in January.
"Today, I didn't play my best," said Davenport. "You know against Martina
you're going to have to play well. I didn't do that."
Davenport officially begins her third stint at the top spot on Monday,
when the new WTA Tour singles rankings are released.
"I think our rivalry has been a great story line," she said. "Me trying
to get to No. 1, now I have No. 1, and she is going to try to get it back.
We go on from there. I think it's a good story."
The rivals have played four times this year. Before today, Hingis last
defeated the American 18 months ago at the 1998 WTA Tour Championship on
carpet.
Davenport and Hingis met in the final at the Australian Open, in Scottsdale
-- which was canceled due to rain -- and at Indian Wells. Davenport, who
had a 21-match winning streak halted, leads the all-time series, 11-8.
Hingis improved her season record to 26-3 and tied Davenport with 28
career singles titles. Hingis inflicted the worst loss of Monica Seles'
career in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0, and did not drop a set in six matches.
On Sunday, second seed and two-time champion Pete Sampras of the United
States faces No. 6 Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil in the men's final. First
prize is $410,000.
