| MIAMI (TICKER) -- Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport
continue tennis' hottest rivalry in today's final of the $5.725 million
Ericsson Open.
For the fourth straight tournament, Hingis and Davenport will square
off. The pair have contested the final of the Australian Open, Scottsdale,
which was not played due to rain, and Indian Wells. Davenport, the winner
of the two titles, leads their head-to-head series, 11-7, having won five
in a row and eight of the last 10, dating back to February, 1998.
Not since the days of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova have the world's
top two players faced off against each other with such regularity.
Today's match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. EST. A first prize of
$350,000 is at stake.
Davenport, the second-seeded American, reclaimed the No. 1 ranking from
Hingis with her semifinal victory over 12th seed Sandrine Testud of France
on Thursday night. She begins her third stint at the top spot officially
on Monday, when the new WTA Tour singles rankings are released.
The 23-year-old Davenport is on a 21-match winning streak, the longest
since Hingis went 37-0 to start the 1997 season. She has won 24 of 25 matches
to start the season, losing only to Amelie Mauresmo in the Sydney International
final in January.
The reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, Davenport is seeking
her 29th career title to tie Tracy Austin at No. 12 on the all-time list.
Hingis, the 1997 champion from Switzerland, improved her season record
to 25-3 with a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal triumph over No. 7 Monica Seles on Thursday
and will look to claim her 28th career singles title and her second of
the season.
On Sunday, second seed and two-time champion Pete Sampras of the United
States and No. 6 Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil will meet in the men's final.
First prize is worth $410,000.
