| MIAMI (Ticker) -- The result was so unexpected that Monica
Seles heard boos from the fans.
For the first time in 535 career matches, Seles failed to win a game,
suffering a stunning 6-0, 6-0 loss to top seed and world No. 1 Martina
Hingis of Switzerland in the women's semifinals at the $5.725 Ericsson
Open.
The match ended when Seles served a double fault as Hingis, the 1997
winner here, needed only 39 minutes to advance to her fifth straight final.
She will face the winner of tonight's contest between No. 2 seed Lindsay
Davenport of the United States and No. 12 seed Sandrine Testud of France.
With a victory, Davenport will take over the world's top ranking from
Hingis, who has held the position for a total of 134 weeks. The American
also will put her 18-match winning streak on the line.
The final two men's quarterfinals also take place today as No. 2 Pete
Sampras of the United States takes on ninth seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador
and red-hot No. 14 seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia meets unseeded American
Jan-Michael Gambill.
The 19-year-old Hewitt has a Tour-best record of 24-2 this season and
already has captured three titles.
