| MIAMI (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland
cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over No. 28 Kim
Clijsters of Belgium today in the $5.725 million Ericsson Open.
Hingis and red-hot Lindsay Davenport are neck-and-neck in their battle
for the No. 1 ranking. Hingis has held the No. 1 spot since August 9. Whoever
advances further at this event will be No. 1 when the new rankings are
released on April 3.
The second-seeded Davenport, who has an 18-match winning streak, will
play No. 15 Elena Likhovtseva of Russia in a fourth-round match today.
Hingis, the 1997 champion, will play the winner of the match between
sixth-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain and No. 18 Amanda Coetzer of South
Africa in the quarterfinals.
Fifth-seeded Serena Williams, who lost to sister Venus in last year's
final, meets No. 13 Jennifer Capriati today in an All-American fourth-round
match.
Two-time champion Monica Seles plays No. 9 Anna Kournikova of Russia,
a runner-up in 1998, tonight.
Top men's seed Andre Agassi will meet Andrei Pavel in a third-round
match today.
No. 2 Pete Sampras survived his third-round match, defeating Swiss teenager
Andreas Vinciguerra, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on Sunday.
In other men's third-round matches, sixth-seeded Gustavo Kuerten of
Brazil meets Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia; No. 8 Marcelo Rios plays Nicolas
Escude of France; ninth-seeded Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador faces Felix
Mantilla and No. 10 Tim Henman of Britain battles Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina.
First prize for the men's champion is $410,000. The women's winner pockets
$350,000.
