Hingis, No. 2 Lindsay Davenport and third-seeded Serena Williams play fourth-round
matches and the men's draw gets underway today at the $2 million Tennis
Masters Series of Indian Wells.
Hingis, who won here in 1998, posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Japan's
Ai Sugiyama on Sunday. The Swiss teenager plays 10th seed Barbara Schett
of Austria for a berth in the quarterfinals. Schett posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory
over Poland's Magdalena Grzybowska. Hingis is 8-0 lifetime against Schett.
The 1997 winner, Davenport meets France's Julie Halard-Decugis today.
She notched a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Natasha Zvereva of Belarus on Sunday
while Halard-Decugis beat Ruxandra Dragomir, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Davenport has
won eight of 10 matchups against the ninth seed from France.
Williams continues the defense of her title here with a encounter with
Kim Clijsters today. The American teenager, who rallied to defeat Italy's
Rita Grande in three sets on Sunday, was stretched to the limit by the
16-year-old Clijsters in the third round of the U.S. Open en route to her
first Grand Slam triumph last September.
In addition, fifth seed Mary Pierce of France takes on No. 16 Elena
Likhovtseva of Russia, sixth seed Conchita Martinez of Spain goes against
Dominique Van Roost of Belgium; and No. 7 Monica Seles of United States
battles Sabine Appelmans of Belgium.
Also, Nathalie Dechy of France, who ousted eighth seed Anna Kournikova
on Sunday, faces another Russian, Elena Dementieva, and American Chanda
Rubin squares off against Karina Habsudova of Slovakia, who downed No.
4 Nathalie Tauziat of France.
Top seed and two-time runner-up Andre Agassi of the United States, who
has won three of the last four Grand Slams, plays Morocco's Hicham Arazi
in a rematch of their Australian Open quarterfinal.
Agassi, who owns a 22-11 record at this event, had his 10-match winning
streak stopped last week by a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Francisco Clavet of Spain
at the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale.
Third seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia hopes to win for the first time
in three visits to this Californian desert resort when he faces American
Vincent Spadea today.
Kafelnikov, whose rivalry with Spadea is tied at 3-3, is 15-5 this season
with a pair of final finishes and a trip to the semifinals.
Also today, eighth seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador meets Jonas Bjorkman
of Sweden, ninth-seeded Cedric Pioline of France squares off against Nicolas
Escude of France, No. 10 Thomas Enqvist of Sweden encounters Jerome Golmard
of France, and 1998 finalist No. 15 Greg Rusedski of Britain battles American
James Blake.
Tonight, defending champion Mark Philippoussis, the 12th seed from Australia,
takes on Chris Woodruff of the United States. Philippoussis won the Sybase
Open last month but has been out with a knee injury.
Six matches involving unseeded players also take place today.
The men's portion of this event begins Monday. First prize for the women's
champion is $330,000.
