| SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (TICKER) -- Gunning for her second
straight singles title, top seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland tonight
defeated the player she beat for her last tournament win.
Hingis became the first player to lock up a semifinal berth as she dumped
seventh seed Sandrine Testud of France, 6-4, 6-2, in 67 minutes at the
$535,000 State Farm Tennis Championships.
Russian teenager Anna Kournikova, the sixth seed, recorded her second
consecutive convincing victory as she routed qualifier Sylvia Plischke
of Austria, 6-1, 6-1, in 50 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. Earlier
this week it was announced she and Florida Panthers superstar right wing
Pavel Bure are engaged.
Monica Seles, unseeded at a tournament for the first time since 1989,
set up an all-American quarterfinal showdown with second seed Lindsay Davenport
by eliminating eighth seed Barbara Schett of Austria, 7-6 (11-9), 6-1.
Unseeded Nathalie Dechy of France continued her impressive two-week
stretch as she got past Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, 6-3,
4-6, 6-1. Dechy reached her first career final last week in Oklahoma City
before losing to Seles. Next up for Dechy is third-seeded countrywoman
Mary Pierce.
This year's Australian Open runner-up, Hingis is playing in her first
event since defeating Testud in the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo last
month. Hingis improved to 9-0 lifetime over Testud with tonight's win.
The 18-year-old Kournikova has dropped only five games in her first
two matches as she attempts to win her first career singles title. Her
quarterfinal opponent will be unseeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who upset
fourth seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France on Wednesday.
First prize at this hardcourt event is $87,000.
