| SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (TICKER) -- Top seed Martina Hingis
of Switzerland showed no rust from a one-month layoff as she coasted to
victory today at the $535,000 State Farm Tennis Championships.
Competing in her first match since capturing the Pan Pacific Open in
Tokyo last month, Hingis defeated Chanda Rubin of the United States, 6-3,
6-3, in a second-round match.
Only five weeks after meeting in the Australian Open semifinals, second
seed Lindsay Davenport battles resurgent Jennifer Capriati tonight in an
all-American second-round clash.
Seventh seed Sandrine Testud of France earned a quarterfinal meeting
with Hingis by downing Amy Frazier of the United States, 7-5, 6-0. Testud
lost to Hingis in the Tokyo final.
Later, third seed Mary Pierce of France takes on qualifier Sandra Nacuk
of Yugoslavia, and fourth seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France looks to
bounce back from an abdominal strain suffered last week in Oklahoma City
when she encounters Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
Also, former world No. 1 Monica Seles of the United States, unseeded
at a tournament for the first time since 1989, advanced to the second round
with a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) win over Silvija Talaja of Croatia. Seles returned
from a broken foot last week and claimed the title at Oklahoma City.
Davenport is playing in her first event since capturing her third Grand
Slam singles title at the Australian Open with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Hingis.
Ranked No. 2 in the world, Davenport trails the top-ranked Hingis by only
494 points in the latest WTA rankings.
After personal problems forced Capriati out of tennis in the mid-1990s,
she rededicated herself last season to the sport she took by storm in the
early 1990s and won two tournaments.
Capriati, 23, continued her comeback at the Australian Open by advancing
to her first Grand Slam semifinal in more than eight years before falling,
6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to Davenport.
Overall, Davenport has won three of four meetings with Capriati.
First prize at this hardcourt event is $87,000.
