| Indian Wells, CA (TSN) - Top-seeded Martina Hingis cruised to an easy win,
while third-seeded Monica Seles was upended by Slovakia's Henrieta Nagyova
in Monday's third-round action of the $1.3 million Evert Cup women's tennis
tournament in California.
Nagyova won the match's first five games and put Seles away in just
65 minutes, 6-2, 6-4. It was the first win ever for Nagyova over a top-10
player.
Seles was playing at Indian Wellsfor the first time since winning
the title there in 1992.
Other third-round upsets on the day included Chanda Rubin's 6-4,
6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Amanda Coetzer, a two-time Evert Cup finalist,
and 12th-seeded Sandrine Testud's 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over number-eight
Nathalie Tauziat.
Meanwhile, Hingis, the defending champion, rolled to an easy 6-1,
6-3 triumph over number-10 Patty Schnyder.
Tuesday's third-round matches will feature fourth-seeded Jana
Novotna taking on Brie Rippner, number-five seed Steffi Graf battling Ai
Sugiyama, sixth-seeded Mary Pierce squaring off against Rita Grande and
Serena Williams facing Cara Black.
The 17-year-old Williams, who won her first WTA title last week
in Paris, advanced to the third round with a stunning 6-4, 6-2 win over
second-seeded Lindsay Davenport, the 1997 champion, on Sunday.
Black also moved on with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-5 victory over 13th-seeded
Irina Spirlea on Sunday.
